Education Center - Urban Restoration Day: Native Planting for Wildlife!

  • Our City Forest - Urban Forestry Education Center 391 Chynoweth Avenue San Jose, CA, 95136 United States (map)

Bioswales are sloped channels that capture storm water run-off. This run-off is slowed by vegetation, staving off flooding, recharging ground water, and filtering pollutants before the water enters the watershed. Right out side the entrance of our Education Center is a ditch that has been taken over by primarily invasive grasses. Our new bioswale will remove these invasive species and replace them with native shrubs and grasses that will attract a number of pollinators and wildlife. This will not only be a beautiful perimeter garden but also dense habitat!

Volunteers will:

  • Learn about native plants and watersheds

  • Remove invasive weeds

  • Apply the sheet mulching process

  • Install nearly 200 plants across 21 different species of grasses, shrubs, and perennial herbs.

Snacks and coffee provided!

What to Bring:

  • Closed-toed shoes

  • Gardening gloves

  • Appropriate sun or rain protection (Sunscreen, Hat, Rain jacket, etc.)

  • Water! Please bring plenty of water to keep yourself hydrated throughout the morning

This event is joint project between Our City Forest and California Conservation Corps Watershed Stewards Program in partnership with AmeriCorps:

The Watershed Stewards Program (WSP) is dedicated to improving watershed health by actively engaging in restoration science, civic service, and community education while empowering the next generation of environmental stewards. A program of the California Conservation Corps, WSP is one of the most productive programs for future employment in the environmental field.
