Volunteer at Alviso, Burrowing Owl Project

Together we will be working to improve habitat for the resident burrowing owl population by removing invasive plants and caring for and watering native plants! This event will include activities that involve lifting, carrying, bending, and walking on flat and uneven terrain.

Waivers/Registration: All volunteers attending the workday must be registered individually and have approved the online waiver through this Eventbrite page. This opportunity is only for those aged 18+.

Parking information: Navigate to 150 Nortech Pkwy, San Jose, CA 95134 the closest address to the project site. The site is not open to the public because it is sensitive habitat for burrowing owls. Access through the large metal gates the end of the road - there will be a sign with directions. Park inside the gates of the project site along the unpaved road. The gate will be locked at 8:45, please arrive on time.

Meeting Space: We will meet inside the gate at the main project site, down the unpaved road. Grassroots Ecology staff will be present to welcome you. No bathrooms or water are available at the project site.

Prepare for Working Outdoors:

  • Reusable water bottle (filled with water)

  • Snacks, if desired

  • Long pants, long sleeves recommended

  • Sturdy closed-toed shoes that can get dirty

  • Hat/sunscreen or rain gear/boots

  • Epi-Pen or allergy medicine, if applicable

  • Plan for potential exposure to sun, ticks, prickly plants

Event Cancellations:

We are committed to the safety of our staff and volunteers. In the event that we must cancel a workday due to extreme weather conditions or poor air quality, a Grassroots Ecology staff person will reach out via email no later than 5:00 PM the day prior to this event.
